Derek was up in his old bedroom reading when he heard the approaching footsteps outside the house. He moved slowly and carefully, edging to the broken window and looking down to see what he could see of who was approaching. Technically, the property was considered unsafe and condemned, but there were two Hales living in it on and off at the moment so it wasn't empty.
