"I'm sorry most of my family died, screaming and begging the hunters that locked us in to please let them out. If you found me, then you know, Chris. You know they weren't all wolves..." She paused, fixing him with a hard look. "And you know we were peaceful. You, of all people, know that," she said, taking those last two steps until she was standing on the riser just above him.
"One of the others? Would it be better that you're here to kill my family than me? I don't see you or the others going after the hunters that killed them. You had six years. Six years to stop them but they're all out there. The insurance investigator that covered it up. The teacher that gave them the accelerate. And the hunters that stood there and watched and laughed. No one came to stop them, but two people die, a deer is slaughtered, and suddenly you're here to do what? Bury me?"
It hurt saying it, closing her eyes briefly and hating herself for that show of pain.
"You would help kill what remains of my family because murderers answered for their crimes? What? Should we have gone to the police? Why don't you do that? Because no one would believe you, and they wouldn't believe me either."
